  8. PURPOSE
  9.  
  10.    The purpose of this trial version  is to show at no cost the features
  11.    of X Appeal,  our X Server for the DOS environment  on 386+ machines.

  14. FEATURES
  15.  
  16.    The main features of X Appeal are:
  17.  
  18.    - Full X11R5 Server implementation (8 bit / pixel), including PEX and
  19.      font server support (using a font server can save several megabytes
  20.      on each PC running the X Server)
  21.    - Support for most SVGA boards,  with special features  like run-time
  22.      resolution switching  and panning on a bigger  virtual screen (this
  23.      allows full use of video memory even with a low resolution monitor)
  24.    - Very  fast  screen  painting,  exceeding  20000 Xstones in 1024x768
  25.      resolution with 256 colors on a 486/33  (results may vary depending
  26.      on the display card model)
  27.    - 32 bit flat mode with virtual memory  to remove client restrictions
  28.      (more  than  100  clients  could  run  even on  2MB 386SX machines,
  29.      providing enough disk space for swapping)
  30.    - Built-in TCP/IP network support,  using the packet driver interface
  31.      for the  Ethernet board  (free  packet driver  collection included)
  32.    - Built-in rcp/rsh server, to allow file transfers  and the execution
  33.      of useful DOS functions without leaving the X environment
  34.    - X Display Manager Control Protocol support (for hosts running xdm)
  35.    - X-Authorization (MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1)
  36.    - Font compiler and RGB database utilities
  37.    - Interactive installation and configuration utility
  38.    - Can emulate a 3-button mouse with a 2-button mouse
  39.    - Support for national keyboard layouts

  42.    The trial version  has the same features  of the  production version,
  43.    with the following limitations:

  45.    - The maximum number of client TCP connections is limited to 8.
  46.    - It can be used for evaluation only, for a limited time (30 days).

  49. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  50.  
  51.    The  equipment  needed  to run  X Appeal  must include  the following
  52.    items:
  53.  
  54.    - A PC  with a 386  or  486  (DX or SX)  processor  (a floating point
  55.      coprocessor is not required, but can help using PEX)
  56.    - At least 2 MB RAM  (4 MB recommended);  extended memory can be used
  57.      when configured with XMS or VCPI managers,  but DPMI is unsupported
  58.      (therefore  X Appeal  cannot run  from within a DOS window under MS 
  59.      Windows)
  60.    - MS-DOS 3.30 or later
  61.    - A pointing device with Microsoft Mouse compatible driver
  62.    - An Ethernet card or other device compatible with packet drivers
  63.    - At least 2.5 MB of free hard disk space  (if using the font server;
  64.      otherwise around 9 MB  are needed when using  the 75 dpi fonts, and
  65.      around 13 MB if using also the 100 dpi fonts);  some more space can
  66.      be needed for swapping if running with the minimum amount of RAM.
  67.    - A Super VGA card  using a supported chipset;  the list of supported
  68.      chipsets for the trial version includes:

  94. TRIAL KIT CONTENTS
  95.  
  96.    The trial kit  is made  by this documentation file  (XAPPEAL.TXT) and
  97.    four  ZIP  archives  (XAP14D1.ZIP  to  XAP14D4.ZIP), each  one  to be
  98.    extracted  on a high density  1.44 MB or 1.2 MB floppy disk,  to make
  99.    the four-disk installation kit.

  101.    The fourth disk  (filled with  the contents of  XAP14D4.ZIP)  is only
  102.    needed  when installing  the 100 dpi fonts;  users with low to medium
  103.    resolution  displays  only need  the  first  three disks  to complete
  104.    installation.

  106.    The ZIP archives  can also  be extracted  on a directory  on the hard
  107.    disk and the installation carried out from there,  following the same
  108.    procedure.

  111. INSTALLATION
  112.  
  113.    Insert the first disk in the A: drive and run:  A:XINSTALL
  114.  
  115.    The installation program  will ask some  configuration questions  and
  116.    then will install  X Appeal on your hard disk.  For more information,
  117.    or  in  case  of installation problems,  refer  to the manual  on the
  118.    second  disk,  contained  in  the  XAPMAN.ZIP  archive;  it  is  also
  119.    available in the installation directory.

  121.    If you do not know  the VGA chip  used on your display card,  you can
  122.    run the utility program WHICHVGA.EXE  on the first disk;  it will try
  123.    to determine  the chip brand and model  and the driver  needed during
  124.    installation; remember the driver name and start installation.

  126.    Avoid to modify the system date  after the installation  of the trial
  127.    version; this could cause the trial period to expire prematurely.

  134.    The trial version  of X Appeal  is Copyright (c) Xtreme s.a.s.,  that
  135.    retains the full ownership on it;  no modification can be made on the
  136.    executable files  included  in  the trial kit.  For the complete list
  137.    of  licensing   conditions,   see  the  manual  on  the  installation
  138.    directory.

  140.    The trial version  can be  freely copied  and redistributed,  with no
  141.    royalty  whatsoever,  and  can be used  for testing  purposes  on one
  142.    machine  at a time  per  testing site,  during  a trial period  of 30
  143.    days (these limitations are enforced by software).

  164. ORDERING INFORMATION

  166.    The base license fee for a single user copy of X Appeal is US$ 240.
  167.    Low cost versions  are available;  a single user license starts under
  168.    US$ 100, depending on applicable discounts; see below.

  170.    License fees for multiple users  at the same site are lower; they can
  171.    be computed using the following formula:

  177.    The site license fee for an unlimited number of users is US$ 24000.

  179.    A special  introductory discount  of 50%  is available  for customers
  180.    licensing  X Appeal  Lite,  a version  with  the same features of the
  181.    base X Appeal product, but with a limit of 16 client TCP connections.

  183.    Academic  and  educational  institutions   are  entitled  to  get  an
  184.    additional 30% discount.

  201.    A contribution  for shipping charges  will be added  for orders under
  202.    5 users  (US$ 15 for shipments within Europe,  US$ 25 for shipment to

  205.    Customers  who already own  the  distribution disks  and only need to
  206.    register their copy are entitled to an additional US$ 20 discount.

  208.    An upgrade and support contract is available for interested customers
  209.    at a yearly  rate  equal  to  10%  of  the  license fee  paid for the
  210.    product. The  contract  guarantees to the  customer  the availability
  211.    of any update and/or upgrade released during the year.
  212.    For  customers  with  no  upgrade  contract,  each  new  versions  is
  213.    available at 10% of the paid license fee.
  214.    The above rates do not include shipping.

  216.    All orders have to be confirmed in writing.  Fax orders are accepted,
  217.    followed by a copy of the order by ordinary mail.
  218.    Please use  the file  ORDER.FRM  on the first installation disk  when
  219.    submitting an order.
  220.    Orders from EEC countries must include the V.A.T. code.
  221.    Customers  licensing copies  for personal use  and without a Purchase
  222.    Order from a company or other organization need to prepay the license
  223.    fee;  their copy  will be shipped  and/or  registered as soon as  the
  224.    payment will be effective.
  225.    The package is shipped  within one week after order reception, unless
  226.    adverse conditions cause some unwanted delay.
